Academic Progression & Evaluation

To maintain the highest standards of dental education, students must secure a minimum of 50% marks to pass any subject. Failed candidates are required to undergo remedial teaching courses before appearing for subsequent examinations (this is not compulsory for students enjoying carryover benefits).

Promotion and Carryover Guidelines:

First BDS to Second BDS

  • Students who pass at least two out of the three First BDS subjects will be promoted to the Second BDS.

  • However, the failed subject must be cleared before appearing for the Second BDS examinations.

Second BDS to Third BDS

  • Basic Subjects: No carryover is permitted if a student fails any basic subject (Pharmacology, Pathology & Microbiology, Oral Histology).

  • Pre-Clinical Subjects: Carryover is permitted for pre-clinical subjects (Conservative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics). However, students will not receive clinical postings in these subjects until the pre-clinical exams are cleared.

  • Promotion Requirement: A student will be promoted to the Third BDS only after clearing all subjects of the Second BDS. Passing all pre-clinical exams is a strict prerequisite for appearing in the Third BDS University examination.

Third BDS to Fourth BDS

  • A student who fails in only one subject will be promoted to Fourth BDS.

  • This failed subject must be successfully cleared before appearing for the Fourth BDS Part I examination.

Fourth BDS (Part I & Part II)

  • Students must appear for the Part I examination before appearing for Part II. Both parts cannot be attempted together in the first instance (though they may be taken together in subsequent appearances).

  • There is no restriction for promotion from Part I to Part II, provided the student has appeared for all Part I subjects in full.

  • Students who fail to appear for the Part I examination entirely must undergo an additional course before being permitted to take the exam.

Eligibility for University Examinations

Eligibility criteria are strictly enforced to ensure students are fully prepared for clinical practice. To appear for the University Examinations, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Attendance (Examination Subjects): Minimum 80% attendance is mandatory.

  • Attendance (Non-Examination Subjects): Minimum 70% attendance is mandatory.

  • Coursework Completion: Successful completion of all specified academic work for the year, including all practical and clinical assignments.
