Periodontology

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosis and treatment of diseases of periodontium i.e., supporting structures of teeth. Esthetic procedures like depigmentation, gingival contouring for smile design, management of gummy smile etc. are also carried out in the department. We train undergraduate students to primarily diagnose various periodontal conditions and diseases. They also learn to perform the nonsurgical management of periodontal diseases as well as simple surgical procedures like frenectomy, crown lengthening, gingivectomy etc. During their training period they are encouraged to observe and assist various surgical procedures performed in the department. Our department possess advanced clinical facilities like soft tissue laser and centrifuge for preparing various platelet concentrates. Post graduate students are also trained to place dental implants, advanced dental implant procedures like sinus augmentation, ridge augmentation as well as to manage peri-implant complications. Advanced research facilities comprising of microbiological tools (BANA) are also available in the department.

Types of Periodontic Treatments

A deep-cleaning method that removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line (scaling) and smooths root surfaces to prevent further buildup (root planing).

Topical (gels, mouth rinses) or oral antibiotics are used to control bacterial infections and reduce inflammation.

Lasers may be used to remove infected tissue and diseased calculus, often providing comparable results to traditional scaling and root planing.

A periodontist lifts back the gums, removes bacteria, and cleans the roots before securing the gum tissue back in place to reduce the space for bacteria to grow.

Procedure used to replace bone destroyed by periodontal disease, using natural or synthetic bone to help restore stability.

Uses a specialized membrane to encourage the regrowth of lost gum and bone tissue.

Used to treat gum recession by taking tissue from another part of the mouth to cover exposed roots

Benefits of Periodontal Care

01

By removing deep tartar and plaque buildup below the gumline, periodontal therapy prevents the destruction of tissues and bones that support the teeth.

02

Treating gum disease reduces inflammation linked to severe conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory infections.

03

Deep cleaning eliminates odor-causing bacteria that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach.

04

Specialized care helps stabilize gum levels, reducing tooth sensitivity and preventing further recession.

05

Consistent maintenance and early intervention can prevent the need for advanced gum surgeries or tooth replacements.

06

Regular supportive therapy allows for the early detection of recurring infections, particularly in patients with chronic periodontitis

Advances in Periodontic Treatment

Advances in periodontic treatment have significantly improved the management of gum diseases, shifting the focus from conventional procedures to more precise and minimally invasive approaches. Modern diagnostic tools such as digital imaging and periodontal biomarkers now allow earlier detection and better risk assessment. Non-surgical therapies have also evolved, with techniques like laser-assisted periodontal therapy and ultrasonic scaling providing more effective bacterial removal while promoting faster healing and reduced patient discomfort.

In addition, regenerative procedures have transformed outcomes for patients with advanced periodontal damage. The use of growth factors, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) techniques helps restore lost bone and soft tissue structures. Dental implants and implant-related periodontal care have also advanced, improving long-term success rates. Combined with improved patient education and maintenance protocols, these innovations have greatly enhanced both the predictability and sustainability of periodontal treatment.
